The Open Classroom InitiativeThe Open Classroom strand within EDEN have been launched in 1995, with focus on distance education and new technologies in school level education and training. The main objectives are the mapping and the exchange of information about relevant European initiatives and resources. An important aspect of the activities is the transfer of ideas from more "traditional" areas of ODL applications to the school sector. The success of the first conference, entitled "The Open Classroom", and the continuing interest of the international ODL professional community indicated an encouragement to develop this movement further within EDEN.
The Open Classroom Working Group renewed in 2005, is functioning with the participation of European experts, researchers and academics of school level ODL from EDEN member organisations.

Open Classroom ConferencesMotivated by the well-received launching event in 1995, EDEN has created a thriving tradition through organising further Open Classroom Conferences in 1997 in Crete, in 1999 in Balatonfüred, in 2000 in Barcelona, in 2002 in Copenhagen, in 2005 in Poitiers, in 2007 in Stockholm and lately in 2009, in Porto with the participation of a significant number of educators, researchers and policy developers from all over the world. During these memorably successful conferences, it was made clear that there is a real need for increased awareness, consensus building and concerted actions to reach the vision for the schools of tomorrow.
